What If The World Is Alright

I wake up with a list of worries

Like stones inside my shoe

Every headline feels like proof

That something’s breaking through

I see the cracks around me

With my small and borrowed light

But maybe I’m just staring close

And missing the wider sight

I’ve been measuring the ocean

With a thimble full of fear

Calling chaos what I don’t yet know

Calling unseen things "not here"

What if everything that’s happening

Is exactly as it should be

What if my view’s too narrow

And the whole I cannot see

What if all this bending, breaking

Is the way things come alive

What if the world’s not falling apart

What if the world is alright

I’ve seen storms that soaked the valley

Leave the hills a deeper green

I’ve seen endings wear disguises

As the worst I’d ever seen

Every seed goes down in darkness

Before it learns to rise

So maybe what I’m calling "wrong"

Is something else in disguise

What if life is just a dream

Too large for me to hold

Who I really am just wears it

Like a story being told.

And when I finally wake up

I’ll see a broader whole.

What if everything that’s happening

Is exactly as it should be

What if my view’s too narrow

And the whole I cannot see

What if all this bending, breaking

Is the way things come alive

What if the world’s not falling apart

What if the world is alright

Maybe peace is not the absence

Of the things that make me ache

Maybe trust is letting go

Of the plans I try to make

I don’t have to solve the mystery

Or prove the meaning right

I can rest inside the question

Like a star rests in the night

What if everything that’s happening

Is exactly as it should be

What if grace is working quietly

Beyond what I can see?

What if all this turning, learning

Is the long way toward the light

I don’t have to know the answer

To believe the world’s alright

So I’ll breathe a little deeper

Loosen up my grip tonight

If I’m small inside a bigger love

That’s more than just alright
