I Remain Oh I Remain

I I I once believed I could love another

But I painted them with the colors I chose

Held them tight in a dream I’d woven

Blamed them when that story froze

Then I learned I was loving my feelings

Not the one standing next to me

Without knowing the I who’s looking

How can I know what love can be

All these stories rise and fall like waves

And the mind spins exciting plays

But deeper down beyond the pain

I remain oh I remain

I once thought someone could hate me

Could see my soul and find it wrong

But they’re only fighting shadows

Acting out a frightened song

For the mind can fear the lies it’s crafting

But the witness watching can’t condemn

The one who notices the storm

Is never caught inside of them

All these stories rise and fall like waves

And the mind spins exciting plays

But deeper down beyond the pain

I remain oh I remain

I believed I was my thinking

But thoughts dissolve like winter’s snow

I believed I was my feelings

But rivers flow where they must go

I believed I was this body

But time reshapes what’s flesh and bone

Still the quiet light inside me

Says, "You are more than all you’ve known"

All these stories rise and fall like waves

Yet love holds strong through every change

When all I’ve clung to fades away

I remain

I remain

I remain

Who is the one who sees

Who keeps shining tenderly

When everything goes

I remain

I remain
